What to Know About the Metal in Your Impression Piece?

Every impression piece I make begins with the lost wax casting process, a technique that's been used to create metal jewellery and sculpture for thousands of years.

Your loved one's print is first captured by you using the impression kit, then refined by me in wax before being cast into solid metal. This technique perfectly captures every line and ridge in their finger, paw or nose print and gives you a wearable story.

Where pieces differ is the metal itself and I offer a few options so you can choose what suits your budget and colour preference.

My entire impression range is available in bronze, sterling silver, 18k gold plated sterling silver, solid 9k gold and solid 9k rose gold. White gold and platinum can be cast on request. Please contact me for a quote.

About the metals
Bronze is solid, warm in colour and lets me offer a beautiful keepsake at a price point that's accessible if solid gold isn't the right fit for your budget. Bronze is an alloy that contains a high amount of copper, which can react with the natural acids, sweat and oils on your skin. This reaction causes tarnish and sometimes a harmless green mark on skin. How quickly this happens comes down to your own body chemistry. Some people barely notice it while others see it within hours. It isn't a sign of poor quality, damage or an allergic reaction. It's simply a natural oxidation process that is easily reversible. To help with this, I coat every bronze piece in a protective coating before it leaves my hands. This slows the tarnishing process and helps reduce the skin reaction that can turn the area green.

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with other metals for strength and durability. Tarnish may happen naturally over time and is a normal occurrence, not a flaw. Interestingly, wearing it regularly can actually help reduce tarnish because the natural oils from your skin help slow oxidation. A gentle polish with a the polishing cloth you receive with your piece will restore the shine.

18k Gold plated sterling silver gives you a gold look at a more accessible price than solid gold. Over time it may gradually reveal the sterling silver beneath in areas that receive the most wear. Even then, the metal underneath is still precious sterling silver and the piece can always be replated in the future.

9k Solid yellow or 9k rose gold is the most premium option I offer. It resists tarnishing, holds up beautifully over a lifetime with normal care and never needs replating.
